Update: Oilers' Ilya Bryzgalov on shelf indefinately

The Edmonton Oilers have placed goal tender Ilya Bryzgalov on the injured reserved list with an upper-body injury.

As reported here on Monday, Oilers' coach Dallas Eakins told reporters that he wasn't about to divulge any information regarding the status of his notoriously streaky netminder, and on Thursday we discovered why.

“He’s got the symptoms that go together with a concussion, or whiplash or whatever way you want to put it. We always treat those immediately as a concussion, even though we’re not quite sure if that’s what it is or not.” - Edmonton Oilers' coach Dallas Eakins

In other words, he doesn't know for certain, but they're erring on the side of caution.

Bryzgalov was injured when Dallas' Stars forward Ryan Garbutt collided with him in the crease at the pinnacle of a breakaway, falling face first to the ice to the left of the goal, clutching his head.  At the time, Eakins chose to be tight-lipped in regard to the severity of the injury, but calling up Jason LaBarbera up from the minors prompted the media to start asking questions.

In response, a clearly frustrated Eakins responded in his characteristic candor.

It might be two days, it might be two years, take your pick, he took a wicked blow when Garbutt was driving the net. It’s something that unfortunately happens when guys are trying to score goals.

In other words, all the team can do is deal with the already erratic behavior of the veteran netminder and hope that his symptoms subside sooner rather than later.
