Oilers' stopper Bryzgalov suffers head injury, status unclear

Edmonton Oilers' coach Dallas Eakins is usually forthcoming with beat writers when discussing issues concerning his team, but when it comes to an injury suffered by goal tender Ilya Bryzgalov on Sunday the gregarious Eakins was apologetically tight-lipped.

"He has an upper-body injury that we're going to have to reassess" Eakins said. "I've been upfront with you guys.  I'm not being upfront now.  I've got to keep this under wraps until we check him out a little further."

Bryzgalov was injured when Dallas' Stars forward Ryan Garbutt collided with him in the crease at the pinnacle of a breakaway, falling face first to the ice to the left of the goal, clutching his head.

Despite Garbutt's spotty history of league-mandated suspension, there appeared to be no malice intended toward the netminder as Oilers' defenseman Denis Grebeshkov, who was trailing on the play, left very little room for Garbutt to maneuver as they swooped in from the right circle.

The notoriously streaky Bryzgalov, in his first year with the Oilers after posting a 19-17-3 record with the Philadelphia Flyers last season, has a 1-1-0 record in part-time duty with the Oilers this season.  "Breezy", as he is affectionately known to his fans, has a career goals against average of 2.55.

Garbutt had already beaten Bryzgalov on a short-handed goal earlier in the game, but was stoned by the 11 year veteran just before the collision.
