Avs Hejda diagnosed with knee sprain, could return this weekend

Depending on how Colorado Avalanche defenseman Jan Hejda feels, there is a chance that he could return to practice this week and into the lineup as early as this weekend

Hejda lost an edge in Thursday night's loss at Edmonton, hurtling into the end boards awkwardly and tweaking his knee.  The strapping veteran required assistance to leave the ice and left the following morning for Denver where he was evaluated by team doctors, who set his time table for return at 10-14 days.

Apparently, the injury looked much worse than it actually was.

The 35-year-old Czech is in his third season with the Avalanches after spending the bulk of his career with the Columbus Blue Jackets and has been very productive this season, scoring three goals and helping on six others, rating a sterling plus-17 and eating up more than 22 minutes per contest.

Hejda has already missed a win at Calgary and a loss at Vancouver, and will miss Tuesday night's home game against Phoenix and Thursday's contest at Winnipeg.  The earliest the Avs could reasonably expect him to return would be a home game against Minnesota on Saturday - the next chance after that would be Monday when Colorado hosts Dallas.
