Bruins' Kelly placed on LTIR with fractured fibula

It would appear that that Boston Bruins' tough guy Shawn Thornton isn't the only player who needs to fess up to bad behavior on the ice in Saturday night's blood feud with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The contest between increasingly bitter rivals is low-lighted by Thornton's brutal mugging of Penguins' defenseman Brooks Orpik, but it has hardly the only outright assault of the evening, as evidenced by the Bruins placing forward Chris Kelly on the long term Injured reserved list in wake of the broken fibula he suffered at the hand of Penguins' winger Pascal Dupuis.

The purposeful slash, captured on the youtube video below, apparently is not being looked at by the league, even though the entire game should be a training film on how to injure your opponent:

The under-the-radar slash may not have gotten as much attention as the more obvious indiscretions, but it's impact may be more far reaching.  In being assigned to the LTIR, Kelly is not eligible to return to the ice until January 2nd, but that means little when considering the team doctor have place the time table for his recovery at four to six weeks.

Every time we’ve been through that before it’s about everyone stepping up, and obviously Kells is a big part of our teamHe plays both sides of the rink, takes a lot of faceoffs as well. It’s about us centermen trying to take the load and make sure we help each other out. It’s about everyone; it’s not just one guy. We all need to step up and try to fill the void. - alternate captain Patrice Bergeron

This is the second such injury for Kelly in less than a year, as he broke his tibia in March and missed a month of action before returning at obviously less than 100%.
