Coyotes' Doan suffering from Rocky Mountain Fever

Rocky Mountain fever is the diagnosis on ill Phoenix Coyotes' captain Shane Doan.

The long-time Coyotes captain has been on the shelf since before the team's game in Vancouver on December 6th, and still leads the team in goals despite missing the last six games.

The disease, symptoms of which can include fever, headache, abdominal pain, vomiting, and muscle pain can be a severe or even fatal illness if not treated in the first few days of symptoms - and Doan is crediting a Vancouver doctor for getting him on the antibiotic regimen in time.

"The doctor in Vancouver helped me out a lot. He kind of got me started on some medicine that can help. That was before the Vancouver game that Friday. We flew back, and I'm kind of trying to let the medicine work."

Doan had been scheduled to skate on Friday but did not.

There is no estimated date for his return, with team General Manager Don Maloney saying that Doan's timetable is week-to-week, erring on the side of caution.

"Our medical team is on top of it. Every day he seems like he's getting a little better and a little more energy and has started to exercise a little more. We're encouraged. He's trending in a positive manner and for us. It's just going to take time."

Rocky Mountain Fever is a tick-borne bacterial disease that affects the lining of the blood vessels, causing them to leak. This can cause serious organ damage and potentially death.
