Bruins' Seidenberg lost for season with torn MCL, ACL

The German Hammer is on the shelf.

Dennis Seidenberg, the brutally effective shut-down defenseman for the Boston Bruins went down late in the third period of Friday night's punking of the Ottawa Senators while doing what he does best, mugging quick forwards around the net.

Seidenberg got tangled up with Ottawa's Corey Conacher behind the Bruins' net, losing his balance, spinning around and taking Conacher with him, the Senators' forward landing on Seidenberg's outstretched right leg and appearing to hyper-extend the blue liner's knee.

Seidenberg remained prone on the ice and screaming in pain, conjuring images of centerman Gregory Campbell in last season's playoffs when he broke his tibia blocking a shot, but managed to rise up and finish his PK shift before collapsing in the arms of trainers - Seidenberg did get up and skate off on his own and, fortunately, the moment wasn't as dire.

Coach Claude Julien told the media immediately following the game that the tough-as-nails German blue liner would not be accompanying the team on the second half of the home-and-home series with the Senators', which is tonight at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa - so there must have been a pretty good idea of the extent of the damage to his knee...

...but it wasn't until an MRI this morning that the team learned that the worst-case scenario was a reality: Seidenberg is out for the season with a torn ACL and a torn MCL.

In a corresponding roster move after learning the results of the MRI, the Bruins called up Zach Trotman in an emergency role, a strapping 6' 3", 220 pound defenseman with a blistering sniper shot.  Before the results were known, the Bruins had already recalled David Warsofsky, who has only two games of emergency eligibility left before the team must keep him up for the season.

But these are temporary tourniquet, as Julien is trying to stem the tide while waiting for young blue liner Dougie Hamilton to return to action from a lower body injury, presumably next week.
