Predators' release update on Rinne

The Nashville Predators have released an update on veteran netminder Pekka Rinne, but it goes without saying that the news is not what Predators' fans want to hear.

Suffering from a bacterial infection in his hip, it was hoped that the big Finn would be back in net by the end of the year, but that is no longer a tangible goal.

"...we have realized and learned throughout this process, the recovery and rehabilitation from a bacterial infection does not involve a specific timetable. It does come with a degree of uncertainty.

"To that end, and in taking every possible precaution to insure the bacterial infection is managed and controlled with a goal of returning Pekka to full strength, the doctors have recommended Pekka remain on limited activity for two weeks before considering more strenuous activity." - Predators' transcript

The Predators don't have a timetable for his return and they emphasized that they're erring on the side of caution. He had surgery on the hip in early May and played in nine games for the Preds before the bacterial infection surfaced.

The delay in Rinne returning to the ice will most likely also impact his availability to the Finnish Olympic team competing in the 2014 Winter Games starting in mid-February.
