Stephen Weiss has groin surgery; Abdelkader, Zetterberg close to return for Red Wings

Detroit Red Wings center Stephen Weiss traveled to Philadelphia on Monday, but it wasn't to play hockey - rather, the 30-year-old veteran went under the knife to repair a groin tear.

“The doctors are calling it a core muscle injury,” Detroit General Manager Ken Holland said. “The doctor said 6-8 weeks, but with the Olympic break we’re shooting for him to play right after the Olympics.’’

Though a core muscle injury could mean one of a dozen different areas of impact, the fact that Holland is describing it as a tear and that the time table for return is protracted out to two months could mean that an adductor muscle was involved.

“I guess he had a fairly significant tear but surgery went well. We had other players in the past here have that same surgery. They seemed to come back in good shape.” - Holland

Injured during the front end of a home and home series with the Florida Panthers, Weiss joined a lengthy list of Who's who on Detroit's injured list, which still includes captain and point's leader Henrik Zetterberg, Johan Franzen, Jimmy Howard and Justin Abdelkader - all of whom should be back in action long before Weiss.

In fact Abdelkader should be back by this weekend and Zetterberg is testing out his back on the ice and should be considered day-to-day.

The Red Wings have been in a serious slump since the surge in injuries spiked, losing seven of their last nine and dropping all the way back to 4th place in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference, a full 10 points behind first place Boston.
