King's Quick quickly nearing return

Last time LA Kings' Insider Jon Rosen visited with Jonathan Quick, the Kings goaltender was looking forward to getting back on the ice to get a real feel as to how his groin was healing from a Grade 2 sprain and also hovering right around Christmastime when speaking of a return date from the injury.

Rosen Checked in with Quick once again on Tuesday as the date approaches to find out where his head is at, how the groin feels and how frustrating it is to watch his backups turn away the shots on goal that should be his...

...and what we come away with in the wonderfully candid interview is that Quick's wife is happy that he's around so much during the holidays, that groin injuries are unpleasant enough that he's following the doctor's orders and team trainers' instructions as gospel and how proud he is of Ben Scrivins and Martin Jones keeping the Kings in the win column in his absence.

But the most revealing part of the interview, which can be read in full here, was in describing why he felt his groin gave way- surprisingly, the reason being that the defense in front of him is just too good, not allowing many shots on goal to keep his muscles loose.

"You’re trying to stay loose and limber, but…two, two and a half hours, three hours where you’ve only seen seven shots or whatever, and then you go to make a movement that normally would never give you an issue. You stretch out, you put a little weight on it, and you kind of just feel a pop…I tried to finish the play and see if it was just a temporary thing that would go away, but unfortunately it didn’t."

Quick is tentitively scheduled to return sometime between Christmas and New Years Day, but there's no rush from the Kings to get him back on the ice, not when Scrivens and Jones have led the club to a sterling 12-2-3 record since Quick went down during an eventual overtime loss to the Sabres clear back on November 12th - but the U.S. Olympic Committee.

The Winter Olympics squad for he U.S. will be announced on Jan. 1 after the NHL's Winter Classic match-up between Detroit and Toronto - and Quick is believed to be a frontrunner for a roster spot despite the long-term injury.
