Sharks' Tomas Hertl will go under knife

San Jose Sharks' rookie sensation Tomas Hertl was well on his way to claiming the Calder Trophy, but the news that he will have to go under the knife on his injured right knee probably takes his name right out of consideration.

The team announced on Tuesday that Hertl will undergo surgery on the knee and, though it's too early to speculate on a return time table, it certainly appears that the 20-year-old center will miss more than the month that was originally reported.

At the time of the injury, resulting from a knee-on-knee collision collision with Los Angeles Kings' Dustin Brown on December 19th, Hertl was leading all rookies with 15 goals and 25 points - his slick skating and all-around making his the favorite for the yearly top rookie award.

Though there has been no announcement regarding a date for the procedure nor any word on the severity of the injury, but Sharks' General Manager Doug Wilson is not going to tip his hand just yet:

"There are a couple of different things we're looking at, I think the MRI shows something, and probably going in at some point will probably reveal the rest."

San Jose broadcast media is lamenting that it could the be end of Hertl's season, but it is far too early in the process to consider that anything more than idle speculation.
