More pain for the Red Wings: Jonathan Ericsson out with fractured ribs

The Detroit Red Wings home loss to the lowly New York Islanders is a capitulation of their season in this month of December and, even more unfortunately, a seemingly routine play also sums up their luck

Wings' Jonathan Ericsson dished out a little punishment to Islanders' Matt Martin in Monday night's contest but ended up on the proverbial short end of the stick, suffering two fractured ribs and landing on a crowded Red Wings' injured list.

Ericsson joins names like Johan Franzen, Darren Helm, Justin Abdelkader, Jimmy Howard, Stephen Weiss and leading scorer Henrik Zetterberg on the shelf, threatening to derail a season of promise that has seen them go from what appeared to be a contention worthy 14-7-7 start to a dismal 17-13-9, going 3-6-2 since having a four game winning streak snapped in early December.

The veteran blue liner contributes little on the offensive end but is solid in Detroit's defensive zone and eats up an average of 21 minutes per game.
