Zetterberg's back, Datsyuk's knee still issues

The more things change, the more they stay the same - at least when it comes to the Detroit Red Wings.

The top-scoring duo of Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk have made their way to Sochi to represent their home countries in the 2014 Winter Olympics, and they've brought their nagging injuries along for the ride - something that can't be wearing well on Red Wings' fans or management.

Most of the attention has been on Datsyuk, who is a revered and honored member of the Russian hockey team who has been insisting that his bothersome knee that kept him out of Detroits' lineup for over a month wasn't bothersome any longer - but his performance on the ice in Russia's opening match of the games told a different story...

...while Zetterberg made headlines on Thursday by missing Team Sweden's practice with a flare up of his herniated disc issue which caused him to sit out a baker's dozen for the Red Wings this season.

No joy in Hockeytown tonight over that news, and even less over a report that Datsyuk wasn't being forthcoming when he said on arrival to Sochi that the knee injury wasn't an issue - because according to Russia coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov, “Pavel is having a difficult time, still,” with his lower-body injury.

Even Zetterberg said he didn't feel Datsyuk was 100 percent, but the allure of playing for the host country as the captain of their National Hockey Team was apparently enough to cause the deception.

The prognosis for each is shrouded by the mystery that is common in both the NHL and International brands of hockey, but for now each should be considered day to day, even though the team physician for Sweden reminded everyone that "we don't have so many days."

Stay tuned, as the drama surrounding the two best friends is about to unfold both in the United States and abroad.
