Flyers' Timonen returns to lineup

Philadelphia Flyers Kimmo Timonen returned to the lineup on Thursday night after sitting out two games with a bruised left foot.

Like all top defensemen, Timonen is a big-time minute eater, averaging nearly 21 minutes of ice time per game, and even though he didn't quite log that much time in the Flyers' 3-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche, he was happy just to be returning to the ice.

"With the Olympics obviously coming, I want to get a couple games in" Timonen said before the contest. "at least one. It's going the right way, I'm feeling pretty good, so it's a good feeling."

Timonen is scheduled to play for his home country of Finland in the Sochi Olympic Games, and while he's excited to get beck into the game after missing nearly a week after taking a puck off his foot, his return was dwarfed in news-worthiness by Flyers' chairman Ed Snider's bashing of the league "breaking up" their season.

"It's ridiculous, the whole thing is ridiculous." Snider panned before the match. "I don't care if it was in Philadelphia, I wouldn't want to break up the league. I think it's ridiculous to take three weeks off, or however long it is, in the middle of the season."

His angst was short-lived however, as a reporter reminded him that when the league suspended play in 2010 for the Olympics, the Flyers advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals.

"Maybe I like them," he laughed, then shrugging " I forget about that."

Snider can be excused for not wanting his team to lose the momentum they've built going into the break, winner of three straight and four of their last five and currently holding the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference.

The Flyers play the Calgary Flames in a Saturday afternoon matinee before heading off to the break, returning in late February with 23 games left to play in the season.
