Finland's Selanne sidelined with neck injury; "He's fine"

Anaheim Ducks' forward Teemu Selanne left Team Finland's opening match of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics after the first period with what appeared to be a neck injury.

But while Selanne is reported to be fine and expected to be ready for Friday's match against Norway, the Finnish Team and their countrymen hope that the same holds true for their defense as lightly regarded Austria scored four goals and led their match on Thursday twice in the first period before bowing out to the powerful Finns by a score of 8-4.

New York Islanders' Michael Grabner stunned the Finns with Austria's first goal just 36 seconds into the match and then led by a score of 2-1 with nine minutes gone in the opening frame before Finland took control with five unanswered goals.  Austria scored four times in just 20 shots against Boston Bruins' Tuukka Rask, who didn't seem too concerned with the sluggish start.

“We kept plugging away and going at it and finally we got the lead and protected it,” Rask said after the game. “The first goal caught everybody sleeping. After that first goal we kind of woke up and didn’t let it bother us.”

As for Selanne, Finnish Team spokesman Janne Lahti said that the six-time Olympian would be available to play on Friday, and was seen receiving a massage and sporting ice packs on the bench, sparking good-natured ribbing from his teammates.

"Maybe he had the bad pillow,” suggested Selanne's Ducks' and Finnish teammate Sami Vatanen.

“He’s fine. He’ll be back,” teammate Olli Jokinen said.  He'd better hope his team's defense will be fine as well, as they will eventually have to face the powerful favorites from Canada to get out of Group B - something that Rask says comes with time and chemistry.

“You try to be your best always the next game because it’s kind of a one-game tournament and you always focus on that one game only." Rask quipped. "You try to make sure that last game is the best one, but it’s not easy and you have to really pay attention.”
