Av's Tanguay may be back after break; then again, maybe not

Alex Tanguay can't catch a break.

Out for 36 games already this season with knee and hip issues, the Colorado Avalanche forward landed back in the trainer's room just four games into his return from the protracted layoff after "tweaking" his left knee in the Av's 5-4 win over the Minnesota Wild on January 30th.

The prognosis?  No one really seems to know, though there is always hope that he will be back after the Olympic break.

Nothing seems to be assured with the 14-year veteran left winger, who returned to Colorado this season to play for his old Avalanche teammate, head coach Patrick Roy - daily reports of his impending return from the maladies always issued with the caveat that he could still undergo surgery on the bum hip and miss the entire season.

So the latest news out of Av's camp regarding Tanguay should be taken with several grains of salt.

"It's such a roller coaster when you're hurt," Tanguay said when activated from the Injured Reserved list in late January. "One day you feel good and you think you're going to be back soon, and a couple days later you feel like you're never going to get back. Not as long as two weeks ago I probably would have said the chances weren't good."

His initial impressions may have been correct, but for now it seems that Tanguay is hopeful for a return after the Olympic break - but at this point one more setback may end his season for good.  If so, his 16 games played represent a career low for the 34 year old, with just 11 points to show for the pain on four goals and seven dimes.
