Sweden's Zetterberg out for rest of Sochi games

Detroit Red Wings' and Sweden's team captain Henrik Zetterberg will be on his way from Russia back to the United States in the next day or two to be evaluated for possible surgery on a herniated disc.

"When you suffer from a herniated disc the way he does, you need to go home for a medical evaluation." said Sweden team doctor Bjorn Waldeback on Friday morning, adding that the NHL doctors "Totally agree with us" on the decision to send Zetterberg back to Detroit.

Zetterberg scored a goal on Wednesday as the Swedes defeated the Czech Republic in an opening round match of the Sochi Olympic Games, but missed Thursday's practice with the ailment.  It was reported via Twitter at the time that he was undergoing anti-inflammatory treatment and was bed-ridden in an attempt to soothe the offending disc, but to no avail.

"It is so painful for him that he can't be in it anymore," Waldeback said. "It is Z who has taken this decision together with me. I think it is the cumulative load. There was no specific thing that happened in the game. The issues came the morning after. These are nerve-related issues and they often come creeping in. It is not one specific injury."

In the short-term, Sweden still must be considered a dangerous contender - but the long-term implications for the Red Wings could be catastrophic as Detroit is clinging to the eighth and final seed in the Eastern Conference playoff race, and coupled with Pavel Datsyuk's bum knee means that they may be without their two top scorers if both are on the shelf for very long...

...a nightmare scenario that Red Wings' general manager Ken Holland envisioned with Datsyuk, though hadn't publicly lamented on - but Holland seemed resigned to the worst in issuing a statement on Friday morning after consulting with all involved.

"In fairness to Sweden, the Red Wings and himself, he made the right decision to pull out of the Olympics," said Holland, who is in Sochi attending the games. "He's going to be down for a period of time."

Zetterberg's Red Wings' teammate, defenseman Niklas Kronwall, has reportedly been named captain of Sweden for the remainder of the tournament.
