New York Rangers agitator Derek Dorsett won't be agitating anyone but nurses and rehab assistants for the next four to six weeks, a broken fibula felling the pesky right winger.
Dorsett attempted to block a Olli Maatta shot in the first period of the Rangers' loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night, taking the puck on the shin - but true to his nature and reminiscent of the Boston Bruins' Gregory Campbell in last season's playoffs, Dorsett finished his shift before repairing to the room with team trainers.
He's only on the ice for an average of 11:24, but his high-energy, fearless board work, willingness to drop gloves and his antagonistic nature is huge for the blue shirts, as he draws more penalties than he commits - and as he leads the NHL in penalty minutes with an absurd 103, his value to the team is obvious.
The time table for his return puts him on track to be back just before the Olympic break, though given his injury history the Rangers would be best served to hold him out until play resumes toward the end of February.
The Rangers may have the most fortuitous pre-break schedule in the league, as after Saturday night's game at Toronto New York plays 11 of their next 16 games at Madison Square Garden, including stretches of four, three and three straight and play consecutive games on the road just once, literal bus trips to New Jersey and to Long Island.
