Pittsburgh Penguins' journeyman right winger Chris Conner has been informed that he needs surgery on his hand and will miss six to eight weeks.
A career transitional forward, Conner has split time between Pittsburgh and their AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre this season, playing in 19 games with the Penguins and earning a minus-3 rating, scoring four goals and assisting on one more while averaging 11:46 of ice time per game.
The news on the diminutive speedster comes on the heels of the Penguins claiming under-achieving forward Taylor Pyatt from the New York Rangers - hardly an upgrade, but brings more size and physicality to the lineup after falling out of favor with the Rangers
"After a strong training camp, he was given a lot of opportunities, whether it be on one of the top two lines, third, fourth, and never really after training camp got his game going." Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said three weeks ago. "Right now, he's on the outside looking in, and I'm not quite sure where all that's gonna go."
Well, it went to the waiver wire and he ended up in Pittsburgh, where he will attempt to resurrect a dead season turned sour by a concussion and uninspiring play.
Conner will be placed on the team's long-term injured reserved list.
