Though is return is not considered imminent, that doesn't stop Tampa Bay Lightning centerman Steven Stamkos from lighting up when asked about his goals..
"I want to come back and play hockey for the Tampa Bay Lightning before I go to the Olympics, if that's the case," Stamkos said recently. "But it's nice to have that goal to motivate you and push you through some of the tougher days."
As Tampa Bay fans will recall with a cringe, Stamkos snapped his tibia when colliding with the goal post after being clipped by the Boston Bruins' Dougie Hamilton in a match on November 11th and had a titanium rod surgically implanted shortly thereafter.
Just two weeks after the surgery, Stamkos was walking without aide of crutches and on the ice in sneakers taking shots only two weeks after that. Obviously, Stamkos is one of the more motivated hockey players on the planet.
He has been skating and performing some motions that place some torque on the broken peg, but all signs point toward Stamkos making a full return to the roster on his target date of February 6th, a home match with the Toronto Maple Leafs, followed by another home date with the Detroit Red Wings before the Olympic break.
"I'd love to come back and play a couple games and be able to play in the Olympics." Stamkos quipped in an early-December press conference. "That's my goal. You have to have a goal and you work towards your goal."
There aren't many who know the young scoring machine that would bet against him doing just that.
